The Portraits
Collecting portraits from all over the world
In Changi Brouwer portrayed more than 300 inmates of different nationalities. For this work he asked a small payment. The proceeds enabled him to buy or smuggle some food and new painting-materials. His artwork was thus part of the internal camp economy, crucial to the survival of the soldiers. Collecting and presenting these portraits means giving a face - and a recognition - to the allied soldiers who struggled so hard during their years of imprisonment.
